'Copy editing' is a broad term, and what it means in relation to your document should be defined at the beginning of a project. It may include the checking of a document's spelling, grammar and punctuation, the recasting of inelegant sentences or the checking of references. It may also include a broader involvement in a document's internal structure (sometimes referred to as 'structural editing'). Copy editing is not just about making sure a text flows, it may involve comments on whether it is missing important parts. This can be of particular importance in government documents, which have strict requirements on a document's presentation.

'Proofreading' should only take place when you are satisfied that the document is structurally sound and internally consistent. Several 'sweeps' are usually done to ensure there are no mistakes in spelling or punctuation, and that editorial and design consistency has been maintained. Queries at this level are marked on the client's copy and returned to the author for confirmation or correction.

Bruderlin MacLean also offers a writing service, the extent of which is usually negotiated at the beginning of a commission.

Designing + project management

Graphic design is the presentation of text and images on paper, screen or other media (such as interpretive display panels). Good design requires a keen understanding of typesetting, font readability (bigger is not always better!) and the end-user's requirements.

Our portfolio displays a small portion of BMPS design work, including books, brochures and annual reports. We can undertake complete management of your project, whether it be the research, writing, design and installation of an interpretive display in a remote location or the print management of an annual report.
